Early Life and Rise to Power
Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769, in Ajaccio, Corsica, an island then under French rule. He came from a relatively modest noble family, and at the age of nine, he was sent to mainland France for his education. Showing early promise in academics and military studies, Napoleon attended the prestigious École Militaire in Paris, where he trained as an artillery officer.
In 1789, the French Revolution erupted, transforming France and Europe politically and socially. Napoleon, a supporter of revolutionary ideals such as meritocracy and equality of opportunity, quickly rose through the ranks of the military due to his strategic brilliance and leadership skills. By 1799, amidst the chaos of the post-revolutionary period known as the Directory, Napoleon staged a coup d’état, overthrowing the government and establishing himself as First Consul of France.
