The Sun, being the primary driver of space weather, emits vast amounts of energy and particles that interact with the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere.
The Sun: The Primary Driver of Space Weather
1. Solar Activity and Sunspots:
• The Sun’s surface is marked by sunspots, which are areas of intense magnetic activity. These spots are cooler than the surrounding areas and are associated with solar flares and CMEs.
2. Solar Flares:
• Solar flares are sudden bursts of radiation caused by the release of magnetic energy stored in the Sun’s atmosphere. These can affect Earth within minutes, disrupting communication and navigation systems.
3. Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs):
• CMEs are massive bursts of solar wind and magnetic fields rising above the solar corona or being released into space. When directed towards Earth, CMEs can cause significant geomagnetic storms.
